Food Bank Oct. 16th was World Food Day. Most of you will know that we have a food box in the church and accept donations of food for our community food bank on any Sunday. Our parishioners at St. Helen’s have always given generously. We have had a special collection for these last two Sundays and the offerings will be taken to our local food ban this week. Thank you to everyone who has donated. May we remember our blessings as we give to others.
Sunday School – Our Sunday School is well underway under the leadership of Anoma Thilakeratne and Roshi Anthonisz. We would like more help from week to week. If you think you would like to find out more about helping with this ministry, please speak with our priest, Steve, or with Anoma or Roshi. As with many ministries working with children and other vulnerable people a criminal records check must be undertaken.
Dorcas Shower - Wednesday, October 21, the ACW will be holding their annual Dorcas Shower to help the less fortunate in our community. Our members will be purchasing a variety of baby layette items, including sleepers (6 to 24 months), flannel and disposable diapers (up to size 2), bibs, flannel receiving blankets, one-piece combos, hooded bath towels, bar soap, burp pads, 2 piece outfits (T-shirts and pants), teething rings, small plush toys, infant/toddler books, diaper pins, and small sizes of baby shampoo, diaper rash cream, and baby wipes. Knitted sweater sets and knitted/crocheted blankets (40” x 40”) are most welcome additions. If you would like to support our efforts, please leave your donations at the back of the church.
Our Website and Facebook Page Please do visit our webpage at www.sthelensurrey.ca which has been substantially updated with information of all kinds. Please also visit and ‘Like’ our Facebook page. When you like the page, you will get the new posts on your own Facebook page when it is updated. Please do make sure you ‘Like’ the page and not just the post. We now have 92 likes for the page and it would be great to reach 100 likes before much longer. When there are special events to take place please share the post on your page. By doing so you are helping to get the information out there about our event with the likelihood that more people will be looking to attend.
First Aid Course – A one day Emergency First Aid Course is to take place here at St. Helen’s on Saturday, Oct 31st. run by one of our former parishioners, Amelia Foster. The cost is $70 per person. The cost will go down slightly with more people signing up. If you would like to register for this, please speak with Kelly Foulds or email at kdawn_559@hotmail.com
OUR Christmas Bazaar - WAYS YOU CAN C ONTRIBUTE ...to help make our largest FUNDraiser, FUNraiser and FRIENDraiser a great success. - advertise for us -invite everyone! we need the people to purchase our goods! -can you volunteer to oversee the Publicity? -volunteer to “man” a table or be part of a table team
-can you supply a few bags of specific candy please see Lynn
-there will be at least one evening work party we could use your help, so stay tuned.
-a few jobs can be completed “at home”, see Lynn
-can you sew or crochet? We can suggest a project.
-BAKE, BAKE AND KEEP BAKING especially pies and bread/buns
-if you are still preserving/pickling please give generously.
-if you would like to contribute (items or $ to purchase items) for themed gift baskets, this would be appreciated.
-sell the raffle tickets consider selling one more book than you did last year.
-talk to your friends, have they been to a craft sale/bazaar lately, what was different
Kitchen in the Lower Hall – After a lot of flooding in the lower hall last April, there was a great deal of work that had to be done to fix up the kitchen. We were given cupboards and appliances by Shannon Herd and for the last few months Les Foulds has been doing the necessary work to refurbish the kitchen including replacing the flooring, installing the cupboards and appliances etc. It is now in its finishing stages. If you would like to see the work done, please do go and have a gander after the service today. If you would like to make a donation toward the work that has been done, please speak with our treasurer, Bill Nicholson.
2016 Church Calendars.......are available now St. Helen’s ACW is pleased to offer copies for $7.00 each. Scenes of various churches across Canada are featured, beginning with Barkerville, BC, in January. A list of Holy Days and other observances as well as the liturgical colours are included. Please see Jacquie Stinson or Judy Nicholson to get your copy.
Songs of Praise – Tuesday, October 27th - Once a month usually the last Tuesday of the month we gather at 7pm in the church to sing our hearts out in songs of praise. We go through many of the hymns that will be upcoming in the month ahead. This is not a choir rehearsal but just a good hymn sing. Sometimes we learn a bit about where a hymn may have come from or something about the composer. It is a lot of fun and we usually finish by 8:15. Do come along no matter what you might think of your voice and join our happy chorus
Anglican Journal Newspaper for November has arrived & are at the back of the church for anyone who wishes to take one.
