Please Note the Wednesday Morning Eucharist has now stopped for the summer and will resume in the autumn.
Lunch Bunch The next gathering and the last of the season is on Tuesday, June 7th. It will be Chinese food for the occasion. If you are planning to attend, please give your name to Pat Nociar along with $10.00 per person by June 5th.
Please note that Steve and Jos will be moving during the week of June 6th-10th. Steve will be setting up the office in the hall and will be in and out of the church property over the week. He will of course still be available for pastoral emergencies at his usual phone & email address listed above. St. Helen’s Annual Strawberry Tea – is Saturday, June 11 from 1 to 3 pm. Please mark your calendars and plan to bring your relatives and friends for a lovely afternoon of fellowship….and delicious homemade strawberry shortcake.
Tea tickets are $5.00 each. Lots of door prizes to be won! Tickets are available now from Judy Nicholson, Heather Herd or any of the Altar Guild members. Donations of Home Baking are also welcome. These can be dropped off on Friday, June 10th, from 6:30 to 8pm, wrapped, ingredients noted and a suggested price. Please see Pat Nociar if you have any questions. Judy will also have raffle tickets offering prizes of $150 Spa card, $100 cash & $50 Keg card. There will be a jewelry & a Watkins display. Plus, we will be celebrating our Queen’s 90th birthday! Come and join us! All are welcome!
Quiz night at the Pub St Helen’s ‘pub’ that is! Taking place on Sat evening, June 18th at 7:00 pm in our upper hall. Make up a team of 2-6 people & a team name & register your team (see posters) Munchies & some beverages will be provided or you are welcome to bring your own preferred beverage. Are you up for the challenge of winning the coveted ‘St Helen’s Wise Old Owl’ trophy? Promises to be a fun evening!
Sunday School will be winding up on Sunday, June 19th. The children and youth will be taking a major part in our 10am Eucharist that morning. Families mark your calendars for this and don’t forget about our picnic service on June 26th at Bear Creek Park. See notice below. Over the summer there will be activities available for the children at the back of the church as well as opportunities for the children to participate in the Eucharist service.
The Gardening Bucket – There is always some work that needs to be done on the grounds that requires some financial input as well as the usual sweat equity from those who minister by keeping the grounds in great shape. To that end over the course of the summer we will have a bucket out in the church and in the hall at coffee hour and are looking for loonies, toonies, and fivers that you find are just burning holes in your pockets and purses. We will use what is collected to offset the cost of materials. We hope to achieve a goal of around $800. Please do be generous. If you would like to know more about getting involved with the grounds keeping and flower beds, please speak with our lead gardener, Jean Robertson or our associate warden, John Palmer.
Tri-Parish Service and Picnic – Sunday, June 26th - Bishop Melissa will be with us once again as St. Helen’s, St. Michael’s and Church of the Epiphany gather at Bear Creek Park on Sunday, June 26th. The service and picnic area will be off 140 Street where there is parking. The service begins promptly at 10:30am so please try to be there 15 minutes early to set up your chairs and get yourselves settled before that time.
**What to Bring… Chairs for everyone in your party. A potluck picnic lunch – which should enough to share with others as well. It can be made up of all kinds of foods. Remember to bring sunscreen and sunglasses and hats for protection from the sun and heat.
**What if it rains…In case of rain, the alternate location will be at Saint Michael's (12996 60th Ave). If the weather is questionable, an announcement will be posted on the Saint Michael's website (www.stmichaelschurch.ca) by 9 am to advise of the location.
Forthcoming Fundraising Events Over the summer months of June, July, and August we are planning to have a number of fun fundraisers for which we will need help from all the congregation. These events will include up to 3 summer concerts, a Summer Fete and a yard sale. More information about these will be available in the coming weeks. In the mean time please mark your calendar for the fellowship pub quiz night on Saturday, June 18th. Details are right below.
Safeguarding Vulnerable People As most people know when someone is newly taking on a ministry at St. Helen’s that may have them working with vulnerable people such as children and the elderly or is in a position of responsibility such as working finances, that person needs to go through a police check. This has become a normal part of the process for volunteering in most organizations today. To help us along the Church Council has just appointed Jos Laskey as the Vulnerable Person Officer for the parish. What this means is when someone is going to take on a volunteer position which requires a police check, Jos is now the ‘go to’ person to help the volunteer in ministry, find out where to go for the police check and show him or her what needs to be done. Jos will set up and keep our records up to date so that we are doing everything we should be doing to ensure that St. Helen’s is as safe a place it can be for everyone.
Storage at St Helen’s the back rooms have now all been cleared out. There was a lot of rubbish & lots of ‘leftover’ items that did not appear to have found a ‘final resting place’. Even though we now have some breathing room back there we do not want to recreate a congested room of ‘stuff’. Forward thinking, we are asking parishioners not to leave textiles, bottle returns, yard sale items or anything that is asked for, prior to the published drop off dates please. One thing to note is we do not need any mason jars as we now have over 125 mason jars (!) which have been dropped off over time. Thank you
